Lipid Clinic in Toledo, Ohio: Looking Beyond Standard Cholesterol Tests

A standard cholesterol panel gives your doctor useful information, but it does not always reveal the full picture of your cardiovascular risk. At Toledo Cardiology Consultants, Northwest Ohio's only advanced lipid clinic, we offer comprehensive lipid testing and management that goes well beyond what a routine blood draw can show. If you live in Toledo, Maumee, Perrysburg, Sylvania, Bowling Green, Findlay, or the southeast Michigan border region, this level of specialized care is available close to home, without the need to travel to a major academic center.

WHAT IS ADVANCED LIPIDOLOGY?

Lipidology (the medical specialty focused on the diagnosis and treatment of abnormal lipid levels in the blood) centers on lipoproteins (the particles that carry cholesterol and fats through the bloodstream). Standard panels measure total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, and triglycerides as bulk quantities. Advanced lipidology goes further, evaluating the number, size, and protein composition of those particles, information that more precisely reflects how much danger they pose to your arteries.

Toledo Cardiology's lipid clinic is led by Dr. Mohammed Alo, DO, FACC, who co-authored the leading textbook on cholesterol and lipidology with Dr. Thomas Dayspring, one of the world's foremost lipid educators. Cardiologists and lipidologists worldwide follow Dr. Alo's teaching strategies for treating lipid disorders. That depth of expertise is headquartered right here in Toledo.

KEY LIPOPROTEINS WE EVALUATE

LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein). Commonly called "bad cholesterol," LDL contributes to atherosclerosis (plaque buildup inside the artery wall) when elevated. Plaque buildup increases the risk of heart attack and stroke. You can read more about how plaque affects heart arteries in our post on atherosclerotic heart disease in Toledo, Ohio.

ApoB (Apolipoprotein B). ApoB is a protein that sits on the surface of every atherogenic (artery-damaging) lipoprotein particle, including LDL. Because each harmful particle carries exactly one ApoB molecule, measuring ApoB tells us the total number of dangerous particles in circulation, a more direct predictor of cardiovascular risk than LDL cholesterol concentration alone.

Lp(a), or Lipoprotein(a). Lp(a) is a genetically inherited lipoprotein that can significantly raise cardiovascular risk independent of other cholesterol levels. It is not included in standard panels, yet it is critically important for patients with a strong family history of heart disease. Genetic lipid testing and familial hypercholesterolemia (a hereditary condition causing very high cholesterol from birth) screening are both available through our clinic.

HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein). Often called "good cholesterol," HDL helps transport excess cholesterol away from artery walls and back to the liver for processing.

Triglycerides. Triglycerides (a type of fat that circulates in the blood) are associated with increased cardiovascular risk and metabolic conditions such as insulin resistance. Severe elevation, called hypertriglyceridemia (very high triglyceride levels), requires targeted treatment. We also offer Lipoprotein IR Score testing, which evaluates insulin resistance through lipoprotein analysis.

WHY ADVANCED TESTING CHANGES TREATMENT DECISIONS

Some patients have cholesterol numbers that appear normal yet still develop significant coronary artery disease. Advanced lipid evaluation identifies hidden risk by revealing particle counts and genetic factors that standard tests miss entirely. This distinction matters because the choice of medication, the aggressiveness of treatment targets, and the frequency of follow-up monitoring all depend on the specific pattern of lipoprotein abnormality present.

For patients who have already experienced a cardiac event, or who carry risk factors such as elevated Lp(a) or familial hypercholesterolemia, understanding the full lipoprotein profile is especially important before making decisions about interventions. Our post on heart disease prevention in Toledo, Ohio outlines how lipid management fits into a broader preventive strategy.

MANAGEMENT AT TOLEDO CARDIOLOGY'S LIPID CLINIC

Treatment is individualized to your lipoprotein profile and overall cardiovascular history. Management options include:

  • Lifestyle modification and nutritional strategies tailored to your specific lipid pattern

  • Weight optimization to reduce triglyceride burden and improve HDL function

  • Targeted lipid-lowering therapies, selected based on particle type and genetic findings

  • Close longitudinal monitoring with repeat advanced panel testing as needed

  • Genetic lipid testing and familial hypercholesterolemia evaluation when family history warrants it

Our goal is to reduce long-term cardiovascular risk through individualized care, not a one-size-fits-all protocol. If you are already managing a related condition such as carotid artery disease, see our overview of carotid artery disease symptoms and treatment in Toledo, Ohio, as lipid control is a cornerstone of that management as well.
