TriClip TEER for Tricuspid Valve Disease in Toledo, Ohio

WHAT IS TRICUSPID REGURGITATION AND WHY DOES IT MATTER?
The tricuspid valve (the three-leaflet valve that separates the right atrium from the right ventricle) controls the forward flow of blood toward the lungs. When the valve leaflets (the thin flaps that open and close with each heartbeat) do not seal completely, blood leaks backward into the right atrium during systole (the period when the heart muscle contracts to pump blood). Over time, this backward leak forces the heart to work harder to maintain adequate output, leading to progressive enlargement of the right heart chambers and fluid accumulation throughout the body.
Severe tricuspid regurgitation is associated with meaningful reductions in quality of life, and many patients continue to worsen despite optimal medical management. Early referral to a structural heart specialist matters.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
Tricuspid regurgitation often progresses quietly before symptoms become disabling. When symptoms do appear, they commonly include:
Swelling (edema) in the legs, ankles, or abdomen
Shortness of breath with activity or at rest
Persistent fatigue that limits daily function
Rapid weight gain caused by fluid retention

WHAT IS THE TRICLIP TEER PROCEDURE?
TriClip TEER (Transcatheter Edge-to-Edge Repair) is a minimally invasive approach that corrects the valve from inside the body, using a catheter (a thin, flexible tube) rather than a surgical incision in the chest. The mechanism works as follows:
A catheter is advanced through a vein, typically in the groin, and guided to the right side of the heart using real-time imaging.
A small clip device is positioned precisely at the site of the regurgitation (backward leak).
The clip grasps and approximates (brings together) the valve leaflets, reducing the gap through which blood escapes.
Blood flow through the valve improves immediately, reducing the workload on the right heart and easing fluid buildup.
Because no surgical incision is made in the chest wall, patients who are at elevated risk for traditional open-heart surgery can often be considered for this approach. WHO MAY BE A CANDIDATE?
TriClip TEER is generally considered for patients who meet all three of the following criteria:
Severe tricuspid regurgitation confirmed by echocardiography (ultrasound imaging of the heart)
Persistent symptoms despite guideline-directed medical therapy (the current standard medication regimen)
Elevated surgical risk that makes open-heart valve surgery a high-risk option
